Charging and starting faults traced, not swapped

A flat battery has more than one possible cause: the battery itself, the charging system, a parasitic drain, or a connection that will not carry the current. Replacing the battery only fixes one of them.

We test the battery under starting load, check the charging system output and the belt that drives it, and follow the circuit through the terminals, earths, fuses and relays that carry it. Lighting, signalling and starting circuits are checked the same way.

You are told what the test showed: what holds charge, what does not, and which part of the system is responsible.

A test is quoted as its own job. If a battery or another component needs replacing, that is priced separately with the part listed by name — and where a cheaper or original-equipment part is an option, you see both figures before anything is ordered.

The battery is new. Why is the car still failing to start?: Because the battery is only one part of the system. A drain, a poor earth or a weak charging output will flatten a healthy battery in the same way. Testing under load and checking the charging output tells you which it is.

Can a parasitic drain be found without the car staying overnight?: Sometimes it can be measured on the spot. A drain that is intermittent may need the vehicle left with us so we can watch it from cold — we will tell you which applies.

Do you check warning lights and dashboard faults?: Yes. Instrument and warning-light faults are electrical faults like any other, and are traced through the circuit in the same way.
