Questions we are asked before a job is booked
Ten answers covering price, approvals, parts, warning lights and how the workshop runs. If your question is not here, call or send it through.
Servicing & approvals
Most of what we are asked comes back to two things
What the price depends on, and what happens if a job turns out to be bigger than it looked. The answers below are the working version, not the marketing one.
- Will the bill change once you have started?
- Not without your agreement. Work is quoted before it begins, and if something extra turns up once the vehicle is apart, work stops there. The finding is described, the options are priced, and nothing further happens until you have approved it.
- What does servicing cost, and how often is it due?
- Most cars land in the €120–€200 band for a full service, and the routine items below that fall into the €60–€120 band. The exact figure is set by make, engine, mileage and the items your manufacturer’s schedule calls for, so it is confirmed per vehicle before anything is ordered. On the interval: the schedule your manufacturer sets for that model decides it, and for most cars it falls annually or at a stated mileage, whichever comes first.
- Can I drive with a warning light on?
- It depends which light. A steady engine-management light usually means a fault has been recorded, and the car can normally be driven carefully to a workshop for diagnosis. A red oil-pressure or temperature warning is different: stop safely and switch the engine off, because continuing can turn a repair into an engine. If you are unsure, call us before you set off and describe what you can see.
- Do you use original or non-original parts, and can I choose?
- You can choose. We quote the parts we plan to fit with the price shown, and where original-equipment parts are an alternative, that is priced as a separate option at the same stage so you can compare before deciding.
- What happens if the same fault comes back?
- Bring it back and we will re-check the fault against the work that was carried out. Where a part we supplied has failed, it is handled under the warranty terms that apply to that part; the terms for your particular job are confirmed in writing with the quote, so you know where you stand before the work starts.
- Is diagnosis charged, and does it come off the repair?
- Diagnostic time is charged as work in its own right, because it is work: reading codes, testing circuits and confirming which component has failed. Whether it is absorbed into a repair depends on the job, and we tell you which applies before we start. If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, the diagnostic time remains payable.
- Do I need an appointment?
- For planned work, yes. Booking ahead means the ramp, the parts and the time are ready when you arrive. Tell us the registration, the mileage and what the vehicle is doing, and we will confirm a time. If the vehicle cannot be driven, say so when you call and we will discuss what is possible.
- Do you carry out MOT-related checks?
- We check the items an MOT covers — brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, lights and the condition of the structure we can see — and quote any work needed before a test. We do not issue MOT certificates; testing is carried out by a testing station.
- Can you look after a van or a small fleet?
- Yes. We work with light commercial vehicles and small fleets: servicing planned per vehicle and booked ahead of the due date, records held per registration, and work scheduled around your operating hours so availability comes first. Tell us how many vehicles you run and how they are used and we will set out how it would work.
- How do I contact you, and when will I hear back?
- Call +44 7891 854060 or email support@selectcar.repair. Enquiries are answered in the order they arrive; if the vehicle is unsafe to drive or you need it looked at urgently, say so when you get in touch and it will be prioritised.
